Thanks for your statement "Massive replacement of person-person meetings with videoconferencing could also result in a happier European politics". Several Commission services are already using high-quality live webcast services with advanced CMS, interactive features etc thanks to an initiative by DG SCIC, the EC webcast portal http://webcast.ec.europa.eu .This allowed some DGs to create specific portlets, like http://webcast.ec.europa.eu/dgenttv/portal/ (a project I launched in 2008) and http://webcast.ec.europa.eu/dgtrentv/portal/ . DG SCIC describes these services at http://ec.europa.eu/ipg/services/web_streaming/index_en.htm .

Are you suggesting that the EU Institutions adopt modern online communications technologies? Good luck! ;-)

"They bring their sleep deprived grumpiness to the tables of European decision making and all they can look forward to are the incredible queues at the Brussels airport security controls in the evening."

Am I one of the few who realise that sleep-deprived grumpiness is a major block to useful collaboration? I always make a point of arriving in Brussels the evening before any meeting: it's the only way to be positively collaborative. But it means that meetings cost even more.

As usual, the answer is out there ready to be applied with a spot of lateral thinking... and it looks to me as though you are doing that rather well, Ziga. I wish you every success!

Ziga, you make an excellent point. It seems that there is a new precedent for this as reported by this <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/ptech/04/16/volcano.ash.norway.ipad/index.html?hpt=Sbin" rel="nofollow">CNN story</a>. Good luck in changing things!
